RMIT is a global university of technology, design and enterprise in which teaching, research and engagement are central to achieving positive impact and creating life-changing experiences for our students.  The College of Design and Social Context (DSC) encompasses RMIT University’s renowned art, architecture, design, built environment, communication, and social science disciplines. 

The School of Education is part of the College of DSC and offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in education, pre-service teacher education, early childhood education, educational research, professional learning and short courses.  It also encompasses RMIT's new Urban School - a senior secondary school, situated in inner city Melbourne. This School provides creative, connected and personalised learning journeys for senior secondary learners. It is a site for growth, applied research and partnerships.

The Role 

This Associate Dean/Urban School Leader position will lead the development of our Urban School right here in the heart of the city. The role will lead the transformation of our current VCE program, which currently consists of 400 students studying Year 11 and 12 VCE and a staff of 20. 

You will help build personalised pathways into and across our university – capitalising on our Vocational Education, Higher Education and micro-credential offerings.

This position will require you to lead significant areas and functions within the Urban School to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the education program.  You will have significant responsibility for the school’s programs, budget and staffing within the framework of the strategic plan, policies and budget.

You will manage the teaching staff and program budget and have oversight of the education programs.  In addition, you will work closely with and report to the Dean, Education to build and deliver on the Urban School's vision, growth and development to ensure alignment with University priorities and initiatives.

Note that the School does not operate as other Schools in that there are no parent bodies, parent-teacher evenings, yard duty, maintenance, camps or out of hours work required. 

Your Skills & Experience 

You will provide evidence of forward-thinking, significant and sustained educational leadership, strategic creative thinking and implementation of pathways in education, within a school setting. 

It is expected that you will bring with you your exemplary teaching experience in a range of educational settings, including secondary schools, and/or significant work with young people and educational priorities. 

Your will be experienced with leading and managing change in complex educational environments, including motivating staff, developing their talents and building an effective teaching team. 

Essential to the role will be your capacity to develop and promote a personalised student learning environment that promotes all students’ abilities and talents and in building teacher capacity.  Your excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills will be highly valued.

Mandatory: VIT registration

Undergraduate degree in a relevant secondary school discipline area.
