About Us

RMIT is a global university of technology, design and enterprise. Our mission is to help craft the world through research, innovation, instructing and engagement, and to build transformative experiences for our students, getting them ready for life and work.

The School of Architecture and Urban Design is a multidisciplinary, multi-level design school undertaking scholarship in three discipline areas: Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture. Innovation in learning and teaching is one of the School’s strengths, incorporating practice-based and vertically integrated scholarship with students, staff and practitioners exploring design research projects, allowing students to operate as empowered studio collaborators in the pursuit of design knowledge and skills.

The School is leading the establishment of international excellence in research which is aligned to and working with RMIT’s global network of partnerships, industries and cities, another of the University’s key strategic aims. It is recognised as the world leader in Design Practice Research with distinguished practitioner PhD cohorts geographically clustered around activities in Melbourne, Barcelona and Ho Chi Minh City.

About Our Culture

Our people make everything at the University possible. We encourage new approaches to work and learning, stimulating change to drive positive impact. RMIT exists to create transformative experiences for our students, getting them ready for life and work. You will be a part of a productive and collaborative team, who values working relationships and outcomes through open and inclusive planning, continuous information sharing and transparent work practices

The Role

The Research Fellow will work with research teams and partnerships in the School and Research Institutes. The Research Fellow is required to undertake research activities in line with the University’s research strategy.  The position will carry out independent and team research which has a significant impact in their area of specialisation and be acknowledged at a national level as being influential in expanding the knowledge of their relevant discipline.

This Research Fellowship is linked to a collaborative research project, IMCRC Design Robotics that will involve three primary areas of research: computational design, robotic fabrication and machine vision. This larger research project is in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and an industry partner UAP Company.

This Research Fellowship will focus more specifically on the relationship between robotic fabrication techniques and mass-customised or non-standard geometries for the development and fabrication of metal facades through additive manufacturing techniques. This research will engage with algorithmic design and direct 3D metal printing techniques. This position will work within a research lab directed by Associate Professor Roland Snooks that is exploring the architectural design and construction of complex tectonics though multi-agent generative design, machine learning, robotic fabrication, fibre composites and large-scale 3D printing of polymers and metals.

About You

As the successful candidate for this exciting role, you demonstrate an emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs which will contribute to existing Discipline and School research areas. This will be evidenced by publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links.

With strong interpersonal and communications skills, you build robust networks with colleagues and can generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government. You maintain a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration and demonstrate an ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates and lead design projects.

You have strong skills in both the design of complex form and the technical knowledge to bring these forms to construction. This technical knowledge ideally includes considerable experience with 3D modelling, scripting/programing and robotic fabrication.

Mandatory: PhD or Master of Architecture or equivalent in a relevant field.

Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check
