The Satellite Positioning for Atmosphere, Climate and Environment (SPACE) Research Centre focuses on the development of platform technologies for space, atmosphere and climate research. The SPACE Centre was launched in November 2010 with funding from the Australian Space Research Program as part of its highly competitive Space Science and Innovation funding stream. As a key partner, the RMIT SPACE was recently successful in a bid to establish an Australian space research centre - Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Space Environment Management (CRC-SEM) to build on Australian and international expertise in measurement, monitoring, analysis and management of space debris and to develop technologies to preserve the space environment. The CRC-SEM consortium consists of three essential research groups; RMIT University, Electro Optics Systems Pty Ltd (EOS) and the Australian National University (ANU).
The SPACE Research Centre has a strong collaborative network comprising a wide range of local and international research institutions, industry partners and government organisations. The Centre functions to bring together staff and collaborators with a plenitude of expertise across a variety of topics including; satellite positioning and tracking, Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) meteorology, atmospheric studies, geodesy and surveying.
