About the role and college / portfolio:

The College comprises four Schools delivering a broad range of programs in science, engineering, health and technology at apprenticeship, certificate, bachelor, masters and PhD levels. Many programs articulate between vocational and higher education, creating pathways for further study. There is a vibrant research community attracting funding from a range of government and industry sources.

RMIT University is an Athena SWAN member and the College of Science, Engineering and Health is central to driving improvements in gender equality, diversity and inclusion, particularly in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) disciplines.

The Technical Officer, Biological Sciences is responsible for providing technical support for teaching and research activities taking place in the Biosciences Building 223. The successful candidate will ensure laboratories and processes are compliant with relevant legislation, assist with facility issues and planning, and support the Technical Manager (Biological Sciences 223) to ensure safe and effective operations.

In this role you will:

  • Develop, implement and maintain processes pertaining to scheduled substance compliance, as well coordinate, conduct audits and generate reports relating to scheduled substance compliance
  • Provide technical advice and support on day-to-day operations
  • Develop, implement, maintain and review safe work instructions and risk assessments
  • Proactively develop and introduce processes to ensure compliance with the safe storage, handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological products

About you:

  • Demonstrated experience in scheduled substance management and compliance as per legislative and regulatory requirements preferable in a teaching and research environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of drugs, poisons and controlled substances legislation, OGTR legislation and OHS Act in relation to working with toxic chemicals, in managing safety and security for multi-user facilities.
  • A strong service orientation and high professional standards and a demonstrated ability to deliver innovative and creative solutions.
  • Knowledge of the risks associated with hazardous substances in the workplace.
  • A strong customer service ethos, with the ability to work autonomously and within a team.
  • Excellent communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to organise work effectively, respond to changing priorities and work to deadlines.


  • A tertiary qualification in Pharmaceutical Sciences or a relevant discipline and minimum of 5 years demonstrated relevant work experience.
