  • Report directly to the Associate Dean, Sustainability & Urban Planning
  • Remuneration at Academic Level B ($98,495 - $116,965) + 17% superannuation

School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (GUSS)

Located in the heart of Melbourne on RMIT’s City Campus, the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies is one of RMIT’s largest schools. The School’s vision is to contribute to a just and sustainable world, and to deliver education, training and research in four areas of focus:

  • Criminology, legal and justice studies
  • Global studies, languages, translating and interpreting
  • Social work, youth work and social policy
  • Sustainability and urban planning

We provide academic programs in Higher Education in these four main areas. We are a strongly research active school with research centres of national and international reputation - the Centre for Urban Research and the Social and Global Studies Centre.

About You and the Role

You will responsible:

  • Contribute to high quality teaching activities within undergraduate and postgraduate Sustainability and Urban Planning programs and for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities within the urban/environmental planning disciplines;
  • Develop and deliver authentic & pragmatic learning opportunities for students in-line with the School and the University strategic goals;
  • Work independently & collaboratively with fellow academics contributing to efficient delivery of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and demonstrations through forward-thinking, sustainable and engaging course material for students undertaking undergraduate, Masters and Graduate Diploma coursework programs;
  • Involve in varied administrative duties based on the level of appointment related to the goals of courses and small award programs of the organisational unit;
  • Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision both independently or as a member of a team, including publishing research outcomes through high-impact outlets as lead or co-author, preparing & submitting competitive research grants, and supervision of higher degree by research students as appropriate;
  • Cultivate and ensure strong relationships & partnerships with academic, industry and professional communities. 

You will have:

  • Proven academic teaching/ research and/or industry experience as well as expertise in the areas of urban, land use and environmental planning;
  • An emerging track record and recognition in high-impact research outputs, gaining external research funding and developing networks with industry & government;
  • Experience in preparing and delivering high-quality curriculum and course materials at tertiary level for undergraduate and postgraduate programs; 
  • Commitment to perform academic administrative and to deliver full academic responsibility relating to the coordination of course delivery;
  • Experience in supervising Master and PhD research candidates to completion are desirable;
  • Passionate to build strong relationship across all levels of professional staff within the organisation, equipped with high level of communications skills (both verbal and written).

Qualifications

Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in relevant field coupled with research record in the areas of urban and environmental planning.

Preferred: Completion of the Essentials in Tertiary Teaching Practice program or equivalent (if the appointed candidate does not meet this requirement at time of appointment, they will be supported to complete this as a requirement to fulfil their probation).

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
